Rocking Horse Plans Build Continued Day 1
I just rough planed the rockers then sanded them with my belt sander, again you could do it by hand if you take your time but glue the sandpaper to a board first it will last much longer and will be easier too. You can see one of my sanding boards in the picture above just behind the rockers. I also use permagrit tools which I wouldn’t be without. The rockers are now sanded except for the edges which I will do after the rocking horse has been put together.
Rocking Horse Plans – Legs
Here you can see one of the legs being cut out on the band saw, notice that I have wound the blade guide right down tclose to the work piece but so I can still see the cut line. This is really important it helps to keep the blade straight to give you a vertical cut. You can use a jig saw or fret saw. Whatever saw you use, DON’T FORCE IT, let the saw do the work and just apply a light pressure, so what if it takes a couple of minutes longer. If you are cutting thick timber with a jig saw go VERY slowly otherwise the blade will bend and the cut won’t be vertical.
I have cut out all 8 legs (2 rocking horses remember, it’s not an octopus
)
Here are the legs after I sanded them all using my bench disc and belt sander. Don’t sand the edges yet, wait until it is all put together
Rocking Horse Plans – Body
I was unable to get 12″ (300mm) wide tassy oak so I had to settle for 5 1/2″ (14omm) to make the body part. So I am joining 2 boards together, I bought a biscuit joiner (see picture below) some time ago for another project, so I used that to double biscuit joint the part where the head is going to be, then used a 30 minute 2 part epoxy glue, bit of overkill but I had some handy. Tomorrow I’ll cut out the bodies.
I joined the boards for both bodies, I slipped a piece of “go-between” (freezer paper used to stop things freezing together) between the body boards along the glue line then clamped them all together.
Rocking Horse Plans – Seat
I have cut out the seats and sanded them.
Now I have all the parts ready except for the body. I drilled one hole in each of the legs where they will join the body, I’ll drill the other hole through the body, easiest way to get them both lined up for the dowels. I’ll take a picture to show what I mean. Not a bad day’s work considering I had to go out and get the timber first thing this morning.
